BGCBI to provide summer meals
The Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island Hilo Club is participating in the Summer Food Service Program.
Meals will be provided to all BGCBI members registered for summer intersession without charge and are the same for all BGCBI members regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.
Meals will be provided at the Hilo club kitchen Monday through Friday, June 4 to July 27 (the kitchen will be closed June 11 and July 4). Breakfast is from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and lunch is from noon-1 p.m.

Summer PE class at St. Joseph
Registration is underway for a summer school physical education full-credit course for incoming ninth- and 10th-graders at St. Joseph School.

Italian dinner to support KDEN
Amalfatano’s Italian Restaurant will host “KDENte,” a fundraising dinner for the Kilauea Drama &Entertainment Network at 6 p.m. May 6.
The dinner buffet includes a pasta dish, lasagna and a salad. Karl Halemano will provide musical entertainment.
KDEN is a nonprofit community theater organization founded by experienced community theater organizers and performing artists. KDEN’s mission is to provide and promote top quality community theater in East Hawaii.
Proceeds will help with KDEN’s summer musical, Lionel Bart’s “Oliver,” playing in July at Kilauea Military Camp’s Kilauea Theater.
Tickets are $20 and available at the door. The restaurant is located at 400 Hualani St. in the Waiakea Villas complex. Reservations can be made by calling KDEN at 982-7344.
Kohala swimming pool reopens
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation announces the mechanical issues that caused the closure of the Kohala Pool on April 19 have been resolved, and the pool is now open for public use.
The department thanks pool users and the general public for their patience during the unexpected closure.
Free skin cancer screenings offered
May is Melanoma Awareness Month — the month to start a lifelong habit of examining your skin. That’s how to detect melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, when it is in its earliest, most treatable stage.
